Hilton Head, SC - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team kicked off their annual spring break trip with a 6-1 win over Allegheny College on Hilton Head Island this afternoon.
The Marlins came into the match 2-4 while Allegheny brought a 4-1 mark to the Island. In doubles, the Marlins came out strong at #1 doubles when junior Nick Gunther (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) and sophomore Mitch Perry (Johns Creek, GA) made quick work with a 8-3 win. Allegheny grabbed the #2 spot when freshman Timothy Tep (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) and sophomore Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) came up short and dropped the set 8-5. With the match knotted 1-1 the doubles advantage came down to #3. The Marlins pulled out a tight 8-5 win when sophomore Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) served the set out for the 8-5 decision.
For just the 3rd time in 7 tries the Marlins had the advantage heading into singles. Nick Gunther made quick work of his opponent at #2 claiming a fast 6-2, 6-0 win, putting the Marlins up 3-1. Shortly thereafter, Timothy Tep claimed the 4th point with a 6-2, 6-1 decision. At #1, senior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) dropped the first set 6-1 but rallied to take the 2nd 6-0. Allegheny grabbed a 5-3 lead in the match deciding tiebreaker when Gladstone gained traction and clawed his way back to a gritty 10-7 win. With Gladstone's triumph, the Marlins clinched the win. For good measure junior Andreas Combos (Cary, NC) nabbed a 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 win at #3 singles to put the Marlins up 6-1. Upon conclusion of his match the rains came and 5 and 6 singles were suspended.
With the win the Marlins improve to 3-4 on the season. Next up will be a double header tomorrow when the team plays Macalester at 8:30 am then will turn around and take on Ramapo at 3:30 pm. Both matches will be played at Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
