Men's Tennis Concludes Fall Season at ITA Regionals

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -  The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team finished their fall season this past weekend by taking part in the ITA Southeast Men's Regional Championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington. 

Competing in the main singles draw for the Marlins was senior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL).  In the first round he fell to Michael Flemming of Mary Washington 6-2, 6-2 and then to Matt Lurie of Johns Hopkins in the consolation draw 6-4, 6-3. 

In the B singles draw sophomore Mitchell Perry (Johns Creek, GA) fell to Averett's Luke Shields 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.  In the consolation bracket Perry took down Washington and Lee's Ty Loan 7-5, 6-4 and then Southern Virginia's Andrew Blonquist 6-1, 6-4 in the final round.

In the C singles Draw sophomore Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) opened up his tournament by defeating Goucher's Omosesan Adebamgbe 6-4, 7-5.  In the 2nd round Wilson fell to Salisbury's Garrett Malave 6-4, 7-5.  Junior Andreas Combos (Cary, NC) fell in the first round to Connor DeFaber-Schumacher 6-4, 7-6.  In the consolation bracket Combos picked up 3 wins including a 6-2, 6-3 win in the final against Stevenson's Raymond McDermott.

In doubles, VWU's Mitch Perry and Nick Gunther fell in the main draw to CNU's Baron/Kolls 8-2.  After finding themselves down two breaks early in the consolation bracket against Santmyer/Ryan from Salisbury, the Marlin team recovered one break and set up another break point to go back on serve but fell short to the Seagulls 8-5.

In the A doubles bracket Paul Gladstone and sophomore Mike Portera (Raleigh, NC) fell to Averett's Luke Shields and Simon Levinsson 8-5 in a tough opening round match.  The Marlins pair then went on to win their remaining two matches vs McDanial and Goucher 8-0 and 8-4 respectively.

In B doubles, Anthony Wilson and Andreas Combos came out strong by taking down teams from McDaniel and Stevenson before falling to Muhlenberg 8-4 in the semifinal.

The Marlin picked up 11 wins on the weekend, 7 in singles and 4 in doubles.  The VWU men will kick off their spring season on February 15th at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC for a 3 pm dual match.
