Men's Tennis Falls 8-1 to #36 CNU

Virginia Beach, Va. –  The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to nationally ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday night indoors at the James River Country Club.

The Marlins were able net one of the doubles points when the newly formed team of junior Paul Gladstone (Port Orange, FL) and freshman Michael Portera (Raleigh, NC) took down the Captain's Dominic Lacombe and Nick Ruzicka 8-5.  At the top spot sophomore Nick Gunther (Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia) and Mitchell Perry (Johns Creek, GA) fell to James Baron and Andy Mason 8-2 while the Marlin's Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) and Andreas Combos (Raleigh, NC) lost to Justin Cerny and William Trang 8-1 at #2.

 In singles at the top spot Paul Gladstone lost a hard fought 6-2, 6-2 decision to Captain senior Justin Cerny.  The Marlins were able to gain some traction in the 2nd set at #3 singles but fell short when Andreas Combos lost to Nick Ruzicka 6-3, 7-5.  The closest match of the night was at #6 singles where Marlin sophomore Nick Gunther dropped a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 decision to Captain freshman Mitch Brody.

 The Marlins next match will be on Monday 3/19 against Centre College from Kentucky.  The contest was moved up from 3/21 due to an unfavorable forecast for later in the week.  Match time is 3:30 PM at the Everett Tennis Center.
