VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's tennis team picked up their 2nd win in the young season with a tight 5-4 decision over University of Pikeville (NAIA) on Tuesday afternoon at the Everett Tennis Center.
The Marlins were up 2-0 from the start as Pikeville only had 5 players in their travel party for this trip. The Bears quickly evened up the match by taking #1 and #2 doubles 8-6 and 8-4 respectively. At #1 doubles junior captain Paul Gladstone (Daytona, FL) and freshman Mitchell Perry (Johns Creek, GA) lost another close match at the top doubles spot. The match was even until the Marlins #1 team were broken at 6-7 late in the match. Pikeville then served it out to take the match 8-6. At #2 doubles, Marlins sophmomre Andreas Combos (Cary, NC) and freshman Anthony Wilson (Lynchburg, VA) dropped their debut as a team 8-4. The Marlins were given the point from #3 doubles due to Pikeville only having 5 players for the match.
In singles action, Anthony Wilson was first to score a singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 win at #4 singles making the overall score 3-2. Soon thereafter Andreas Combos earned the Marlin's 4th point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #3 singles. With the Marlins up 4-2 Pikeville fought back by taking #1 and #2 singles. At #1 junior Paul Gladstone fell to Bailey Horne (Hobart, Australia) 6-3, 6-0. At #2 singles freshman Mitchell Perry dropped a close 6-1, 7-5 decision to freshman Andres Alvarez (Bogota, Columbia). With the match knotted at 4-4 Marlin freshman Mike Portera came through with a match clenching 6-3, 6-2 win at #5 singles to give his team their 2nd win the last three matches.
With the win the Marlins improve to 2-3 on the season. Next up for men's tennis will be a home ODAC match vs. Shenandoah this Saturday; first serve is set for 11 AM. Later that day the team will travel through the HRBT to take on #30 Christopher Newport University. Match time is set for 6pm on Saturday March 17th.
