Late Heroics Lift VWU to 4-3 OT Victory
GLEN ALLEN, Va. – Junior Ricky Perrault scored the game-winning goal with 3:50 left in the first overtime to carry the Virginia Wesleyan University men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Wesley College in non-conference action on Saturday.
Due to weather on the campus of Randolph-Macon College, the match was moved to Striker Park in Glen Allen, Va.
The Marlins kept the ball in the Wesley half of the pitch for most of the overtime period, collecting both shots and all three corners which led to the game-winning score.
Perrault found his way into the box, taking a shot that slipped into the left corner for the first VWU win of the season.
Wesley looked to gain the momentum early with a score of Chimaobi Ikwuagwu just 1:28 into the match off an assist by Danna Garza.
Wesley took the lead again at 22:34 when D.D. Robinson played the ball to the right side before cutting in to score near the post.
Ron Rosales, a transfer from Niagara, scored his first goal as a Marlin at the 41:55 mark to even the score back at two apiece. Devin Wallace assisted on the score after finding Rosales flashing across the mouth of the goal for the finish.
Wesley did not wait long to answer, scoring three seconds later as Jaki Farlow found Robinson for his second goal of the game. Farlow crossed the ball into the box where Robinson headed it over the keeper for the score.
The Wolverines held onto the 3-2 lead until late in the match when Perrault found Ikechukwu Etonyeaku with four minutes left in regulation.
Wesley had one more opportunity to claim the win but Jamison Auer saved the Danny Garza shot to set the stage for Perrault's heroics.
Kyle Springsteen made five saves for Wesley (0-1) while Auer stopped two shots for the Marlins.
VWU held a 20-11 edge in shots and 6-0 mark in corner kicks.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-0) hosts Averett University (0-0-1) Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. non-conference start.
