Men's Soccer Draws with Guilford on Senior Night, Earn No. 5 Seed

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's soccer team hosted Senior Night on Saturday before a defensive struggle ensued, resulting in a 1-1 draw with Guilford College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Seniors Connor Kirkham, Alex Castelli, Travis Walke, Josh Kemp, Rayce Bennett, and Brian Le were recognized in pregame festivities.

The Marlins had to win Saturday's contest to have a chance of hosting an ODAC quarterfinal and VWC showed that urgency early in the half as Tanner Martin found Robert Holschuh at the top of the box for a goal at 2:29 on the first shot of the game.

Guilford goalkeeper Eric Hayes settled in after that, stopping five shots through the remainder of the first half.

The Quakers managed to pull even at 39:30 when Jake Grieco found the back of the net. Grieco did a good job of keeping the Marlin defense on edge, as what appeared to be a cross from the far right side began to curve towards the back post and over the outstretched hand of Connor Kirkham.

The Marlins maintained possession through the first 20 minutes of the second half, and tried to get shots on goal as Guilford packed in the box to preserve the draw until the ability to make a push presented itself.

Virginia Wesleyan had a multiple chances late in the second half, one especially close as Holschuh ripped a shot that was saved by a diving Hayes before banging off the post and out of play.

The Marlins outshot Guilford (5-11-1/2-8-1) 38-6 with a 14-2 advantage in corners.

Kirkham finished with four saves for Virginia Wesleyan while Hayes stopped 16 balls for Guilford.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-5-3/5-3-3) will control the No. 5 seed in the ODAC tournament and will travel to Lynchburg College Tuesday night for a semifinal tilt.
