Men's Lax Slides Back Into Win Column With Non-Conference Victory

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team claimed, 15-7, a victory against Methodist University Wednesday afternoon at Birdsong field. With the win, the Marlins improve to 4-10 on the year while the Monarchs move to 6-10.

The first half was a tight battle, with both sides exchanging blows. Joey Rayman got the Marlins on the board quick with a goal in the first 15 seconds. The Monarchs would answer would three of their own, but a quick score off the faceoff from Dante Castillo and another from Cole Maguire would tie it up after one period of play. In the second quarter, the home squad outscored the visitors 3-2, including two more from Cole Maguire.

Virginia Wesleyan really got going in the third as the team scored six unanswered (seven total) all while holding the Monarchs to two. The Marlins sunk in the only two goals of the fourth as well, sealing up their fourth victory of the year.

Maguire paced Virginia Wesleyan on the day, netting four goals. He was followed closely by Rayman, who registered three goals and a helper and Tyler Conn with one goal and two assists. Also pitching on the day was Nick Zepko (2G), Joe Couture (2G, 1A), Nathan Sheirburn (1G, 1A).

At the face off 'X', the Marlins dominated as the team won 15 of the 24 attempts. Leading the way was Sheirburn who came out victorious in eight of his 13 restarts. Castillo also helped, going 6-10. Those two also did well coming up with 50-50 balls as the two combined for 13 groundballs.

In goal, Chris McTague stood tall as he turned aside 11 Monarch shot attempts.

Men's lacrosse will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday as the team squares off with Roanoke at home. This will also be the team's Senior Day.
