Men's Lacrosse Fall in Tight Battle With Bridgewater

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team was narrowly edged, 12-11, by Bridgewater at home Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Marlins move to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play. Bridgewater improves to 7-3 on the season (2-2 ODAC).

The contest went back and fourth with the Eagles pulling ahead only to be reeled back in by the Marlins. The first period was mostly Bridgewater as the Eagles piled in the games first four goals. VWU answered with a four-goal run of its own, spanning from 1:11 left in the first to the 4:07 left in the second. Bridgewater got back up though putting home three more goals towards the end of the half. A Dante Castillo goal with just seconds left on the clock cut the deficit to 7-5 as both sides went to the locker room for halftime.

The second half was much like the first, with each side trading small goal runs. Bridgewater never let go of its advantage though, taking it down to the final horn. The Marlins nearly tied it with seconds to go in regulation but a shot from the point clanged off the pipe and sprung wide.

Seven Marlins came away with a goal, with Nick Zepko, Tyler Conn, Matt Baldwin and Andrew Johnson each nabbing two.

Castillo had a solid day at the faceoff 'X', winning 11 of the 17 times appeared there.

Cory Austin got the call to defend the crease for the home side, stopping nine Eagle shots.

Men's lacrosse will return to action at 7 p.m. on Friday as the team travels to play Randolph-Macon.
