GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team opened up its 2018 season with a win, putting away Greensboro College, 13-8, Saturday afternoon on the road.
The Pride opened up the games scoring with a goal just over three minutes in but the Marlins would answer at the 5:32 mark as Nick Zepko netted his first of the day. The two sides would each score another over the next two minutes and with just eight seconds left in the period, Taylor Lalande scored to give the Marlins an early edge.
In the second quarter, freshman Joey Rayman recorded three goals, but the Pride matched it and the Marlins would keep its one-goal lead going into halftime. The third period was where VWU finally was able to put some distance between them and their opponent as the team scored four goals while keeping Greensboro to just one. The Marlins would finish out the last quarter outscoring the Pride 3-2.
Rayman had a phenomenal day in his freshman debut, scoring five goals and assisting on two others. Zepko also performed well as he picked up four points on three goals and one assist.
Chris McTague was a huge factor defensively for the Marlins as he stopped a career-high 19 saves on the day.
Men's lacrosse will return to action at 10 a.m. on Saturday as the team will play a neutral site game against Berry College at the Scarborough Sports Complex in Savannah, Ga.
