OT Heroics by Brummitt Lift Marlins to 9-8 Victory

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- It was a beautiful Saturday on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College as senior Andre Brummitt scored in overtime to lift the men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over Drew University.

The Marlins started of the game very aggressive and didn't look back, outscoring the Rangers 5-2 in the first quarter. Cory Hilliard had two goals and an assist in the period, while Joe Couture, Justin Metzger, and Nick Zepko all scored lone goals.

Couture scored the first goal of the night with 14:22 on the clock in the first quarter before Tom Cotroneo evened the contest at one at the 12:20 mark. The Marlins scored three-straight goals to garner an impressive lead on Drew.

Drew scored three goals in the second quarter while holding the Marlins to just one score in the period to cut the lead to 6-5.

Similar to the first quarter, the Marlins came strong out of the locker room in the third. Matt Baldwin found Couture at 12:21 to go up 7-5. VWC extended the lead back to three goals with just 1:08 to play in the quarter as Andrew Johnson found Zepko for his second score of the game.

The defensive efforts of both goalies were on full display as the contest remained in single digits. Teddy Sweeney made 12 saves for Drew while Philip Venanzi registered 13 saves for the Marlins.

Drew battled back in the fourth behind the play of Seamus O'Connor. The Ranger attack scored at the 11:04 mark before Kevin Goettlich registered a goal with 7:03 left to cut the deficit to 8-7. O'Connor capitalized with just 2:14 to play, evening the score at eight.

Both teams had chances in overtime with the Marlins having the first look before being turned away by Sweeney. After another Sweeney save, the Rangers had a chance to win the game but O'Connor's laser shot was saved at point blank range by Venanzi.

Zepko ripped a shot the next time up the turf, but Sweeney saved his third of the period. He could not corral the loose ball though, which was scooped up by Brummitt. The senior fired a quick shot that caught Sweeney out of position to win the contest.

O'Connor led Drew (4-5) with three goals and an assist while Jack Crowley scored one to go with two assists.

Couture and Hilliard finished with two goals and an assist each while Zepko scored twice.
