Men Welcome Drew for Non-Conference Tilt
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team will welcome Drew University to Birdsong Field for a non-conference battle Saturday at 2 p.m.
Drew (3-4) is a solid defensive squad, only allowing opponents to score in double-figures twice, both losses. Drew and Virginia Wesleyan have one common opponent on the year, Greensboro College. The Rangers and Marlins both defeated Greensboro by 14-7 scores, shaping up for what could be a tightly-contested match.
Ryan D'Alessandro is a dangerous weapon for Drew, leading the team with 18 points on nine goals and nine assists. Jack Crowley paces the team with 12 goals, ranking second with 17 points.
Joe Palmieri is the man face-off guy for Drew, going 44-of-89 (49.4%) for the season. Teddy Sweeney is arguably the best goalie the Marlins have faced all season. He allows an average of 7.14 goals per game while stopping a phenomenal 63.8% of shots on goal.
The Marlins (1-7) will be trying to end a six-game losing skid on Saturday, having not won since defeating Greensboro on February 25. Despite battling injuries, the Marlins have managed to score in double-figures twice in five March contests, showing the ability for an explosive offensive showing.
Joe Couture maintains the team lead with 17 points, coming on a team-best of 13 goals. Six different Marlins have at least 10 points on the season. Philip Venanzi has assuming starting goalkeeper duties for the Marlins after an impressive showing in relief against Washington & Lee. He most recently stopped 44.8% of shots at Bridgewater on Saturday, making 13 saves against the Eagles to keep the match close.
