Fourth Quarter Costs Marlins

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Bridgewater College outscored the Virginia Wesleyan men's lacrosse team 6-1 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Marlins 16-12 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Saturday.

The Marlins jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter as Eddie Desiderio scored a pair of goals to go with lone scores from Andre Brummitt and Justin Metzger.

Bridgewater tried to rally in the second quarter, but the Marlins answered each Eagle score with a score of their own. Metzger scored two in the quarter while Duncan Haight and Joe Couture added scores to make sure VWC took an 8-6 lead into the locker room.

The Marlins struck first out of intermission when Cory Hilliard found Couture for a man-up goal just 28 seconds into the period.

Bridgewater responded a little over a minute later when Chris Voorhees hit Sean MacLeish for his second goal of the game.

Virginia Wesleyan pushed the lead back to three once again, 10-7, at the 12:36 mark when Matt Baldwin found Nick Zepko for the score.

The Eagles responded with three goals over the next 6:30 to tie the contest at 10, the first time the contest was tied since the opening face-off.

Andrew Johnson swung the lead back to the Marlins once again with 4:10 left in the third, but that would be the last time Virginia Wesleyan would score until just 29 seconds remained in the game, a full 19 minutes later.

Bridgewater took advantage of a balanced offensive approach, scoring six goals from five players to start the fourth quarter and take a 16-11 lead. The Eagles forced the Marlins into seven turnovers in the fourth quarter while winning 5-of-8 face-offs in the period.

Bridgewater (5-4/1-1) was led offensively by Voorhees who contributed five goals and three assists, while Blake Mann and MacLeish had three goals each.

Metzger had three goals and an assist for the Marlins while Couture added two goals and two assists.
