Men's Lax to Host Washington and Lee Friday
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team (1-5/0-1) will host Washington and Lee University this Friday in an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) battle.
The Generals (3-4/1-0) enter the contest after a tough non-conference schedule and ODAC-opening win, 12-9, over Hampden-Sydney. W&L was second in the ODAC preseason poll, receiving four first-place votes, and just one vote overall from being the preseason favorite.
Washington and Lee defeated the Marlins 10-3 last season. Tyler Conn had two goals for VWC while Matt Baldwin added the other score. The game was fairly even, with the main difference being Washington and Lee's 13-of-15 edge in face-offs.
Sophomore A.J. Witherell leads the Generals with 20 goals, 15 assists, and leads the ODAC with 35 points. Jack Hodgson will see the majority of the time in the face-off circle, winning 56.8% (79-139) of attempts.
The Marlins are coming off a tough 19-2 loss to preseason ODAC favorite, Roanoke College. The Marlins received goals from Justin FitzGerald and Joe Couture. The junior midfielder, Couture will be looked upon to have a big game for VWC to spring the upset. He leads the squad with 11 goals.
Duncan Haight won 10-of-22 face-offs against Roanoke, and if he can have a big day against Hodgson, the Marlins could even their ODAC record.
