Marlins to Play Twice this Week, Including ODAC Opener
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team will look to bounce back this week against a pair of opponents. The Marlins will return to Birdsong Field for a 7 p.m. Wednesday contest against Delaware Valley before traveling to Roanoke College on Saturday.
Wednesday will be the first time that the Marlins have ever played Delaware Valley (1-2). The Aggies' only win so far this season was against ODAC foe Shenandoah University by a score of 9-7.
PJ Rafferty leads the Aggies with five goals and six assists, while Bryan Thompson has been impressive in the face-off circle, winning 56.4% of attempts. Nic Brown has a 55.6% save mark between the pipes, limiting opponents to eight goals per game.
Saturday, the Marlins will travel to Roanoke for the ODAC opener on Saturday. The Maroons are receiving votes in the most recent national poll.
The Marlins fell to Roanoke last season 23-8. They were outscored in the first period 8-1 and trailed 11-2 with 4:36 to play until halftime. Roanoke ran out another 7-1 run in the third quarter to go up 18-5.
Tyler McWilliams led the way for the Maroons with five goals and an assist. Josh Currier paced the Marlins with five goals and an assist to counter McWilliams. Both players have since graduated.
Peter Lindsay leads the Maroons (2-1), and the ODAC, with 17 goals. Chad Fisher possesses an incredible 80.6% success mark in the face-off circle.
Joe Couture will look to continue his strong offensive output early in the season. He has two hat tricks in four games this year, pacing the squad with eight goals.
The Marlins are looking to bounce back this week after dropping two games this past week.
