Men Fall to Methodist 18-13
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team fell 18-13 at Methodist University in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
Both teams battled back and forth in a high-scoring first quarter that saw the Marlins lead 6-5. Tyler Conn had two goals in the first while Cory Hilliard added a goal and an assist in the first 15 minutes.
The Marlins scored the first goal in the second quarter to make it 7-5, but Methodist held VWC scoreless the final 12:47 of the period while netting a pair of scores to tie the contest going into halftime.
Methodist charged out strong after halftime, scoring the first four goals of the second half to go up 9-7. The Marlins responded with a goal by Eddie Desiderio off a Hilliard assist, but the Monarchs raced out on another scoring run. In total, Methodist scored nine of the first 10 second-half goals. The run spanned 16:56, giving the Monarchs a 16-8 lead with 13:04 left in the game.
The Monarchs took advantage of five minutes of un-releasable Marlin penalties in the third to pull away. Methodist scored seven man-up goals in the second half.
The Marlins attempted a late rally, trailing 18-9 with 5:44 to play. Virginia Wesleyan scored four goals in the waning minutes, but the rally was not enough to overcome the Monarchs.
Kyle Clarkson finished with two goals and five assists for Methodist (4-1) while Jake Smerka posted four goals to go with three from Matt Layden and Andrew Ruskey. Jordan DeSalvo won 20-of-27 face-off opportunities.
Conn finished with two goals and two assists to go with two goals and an assist from Matt Baldwin.
