VWC Take Home Opener, Defeats Greensboro 14-7
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team outscored Greensboro 11-4 after the first quarter to defeat the visiting Pride 14-7 on Saturday afternoon.
Greensboro answered with a score by Daniel Wolf at the 12:30 mark, but the Marlins went on an impressive scoring run to put the contest away.
Virginia Wesleyan scored the next six goals, spanning intermission, to jump ahead 10-4. The Marlins held the Pride scoreless for a 20 minute span until Johnathan Avedesian scored a man-up goal with 4:59 to go in the third to cut the Marlin lead to 10-5.
The Marlins outscored the Pride 3-1 in the fourth behind goals from Eddie Desiderio, Andre Brummitt, and a man-down goal from Couture. Two of Couture's three goals in the game were of the man-down variety.
Chris McTague (1-1) did a good job between the pipes, stopping 11 shots. Chris DiBlasi had 20 saves for Greensboro while the Marlins ripped 34 shots on goal, 49 total for the game.
Duncan Haight had a tremendous day in the face-off circle, winning 17 of his 22 attempts.
Davis Miller had two goals and an assist for Greensboro (1-2) while Avedesian finished with two goals.
Metzger posted three goals and an assist for the Marlins while Couture contributed three goals.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) travels to Christopher Newport University (1-2) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start.
