VIRGINIA BEACH -- An ability to put a bunch of goals in the net at any time in the game has named Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins a consistent scoring threat throughout the season.
So when Marlins senior John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) scored the first goal of the fourth quarter off an assist from junior Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Name-Hill School), there was a common thought about VWC fans that a run was on its way.
Roth's goal cut Washington and Lee University's lead to 11-7 with 14:49 remaining to be played, and the Marlins followed with four more shots in the next six minutes, but the only run that took place in the closing minutes belonged to the visiting Generals. Washington and Lee scored the final goals of the game to post a 15-7 victory in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular-season finale on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.
Virginia Wesleyan, ranked 14th in the most recent South Region rankings, entered the game with victories over 7th-ranked Roanoke College and 11th-ranked Hampden-Sydney College, and hoped to add 13th-ranked WLU to the group, but fell behind in the second quarter and never caught up.
Ironically, the Marlins (10-5, 7-2) took a 4-3 lead to start the second quarter when senior Devynn Kelly (Harwood, Md./Southern) scored off an assist from Tim Gunn (Sparks, Md./Hereford). But, the Generals (11-6, 6-3) took control of the contest by scoring five goals to end the quarter and the first two of the third quarter. The scoring outburst carried WLU to an 8-4 lead at the break and a 10-4 spread at the 8:18 point of the third. Five Generals scored in the extended run, led by Alex Owen (Westwood, Mass./Noble and Greenough) and Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) with two each.
Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River), Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), and Roth scored three straight goals for the Marlins to close the gap, but it all stopped there for the host team.
Papetti and Moran topped scoring with a pair of goals each and Currier finished with four assists. Dabir led Washington and Lee with five goals. SeniorRory Finnegan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell)recorded 17 saves in goal for the Marlins. Wyatt Devine (Norfolk/Norfolkl Academy) finished with 11 for the Generals.
Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular season with a program-high total of ODAC victories and enters the conference championship tournament next week as the No. 2 seed.
