VWC controls second half to post win over Randolph-Macon

VIRGINIA BEACH -- A tightly contested first half was followed by a second half controlled by Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday as the Marlins posted a 11-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets.

The teams battled to a 2-all draw after two quarters of competition on Foster Field at the Trinder Center, but Virginia Wesleyan (4-3, 2-0 ODAC) scored the first three goals of the third quarter to set the tempo for the remainder of the game.  John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun), Mike Moran (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional), and Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Name-Hill Academy)tallied the go-ahead goals for the Marlins, before R-MC (3-7, 0-2) stopped the run with a goal from Coleman Adams (Mechanicsville/Richmond St. Christopher) with 39 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Virginia Wesleyan made its final scoring sure beginning 49 seconds into the final quarter on a goal from senior Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River).  It was the first of four straight goals for the Marlins, who opened up a 9-3 lead with 11:04 remaining in the game. R-MC staged a final rally, scoring four goals in the final minutes, but goals from Papetti and Roth helped to keep the advantage with the Marlins.

Six Marlins scored in the game, led by Moran with three goals to increase his current season total to 14.  That ties him with Papetti for the team lead.  Papetti, Currier, and Roth all scored two each.

Rory Finnegan (Lowell, Mass./Lowell)protected the goal for VWC and finished with 14 saves. Brian Davies (Lynchburg/E.C. Glass) recorded 11 saves for the Yellow Jackets. Ryan Davidson (Logan Township, N.J./Kingsway Regional) led R-MC scoring with a pair of goals.

Virginia Wesleyan returns to action in about 24 hours as the Marlins host the Pride of Greensboro College in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. at the Trinder Center.
