NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Scores by Joe Papetti (Edgewater, Md./South River) and Cory Hilliard (Butler, Pa./Butler) pulled Virginia Wesleyan College's Marlins within a 3-2 score at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, but that was as close as it would get.
The host CNU Captains scored eight unanswered goals through the remainder of the first quarter, through the second quarter, and into the third en route to posting a 20-6 non-conference victory.
Hilliard scored off an assist from Matt Baldwin (Edgewater, Md./Southern) with 12:24 remaining in the third to end the CNU run. Sophomore Eddie Desiderio (Floral Park, N.Y./The Hill Academy, Ontario) added another goal for the Marlins at the 6:56 mark of the third, but CNU scored the last goal of the quarter and scored seven in a row in the fourth.
CNU dominated time of possession by winning 24 faceoff battles.
Hilliard finished as VWC's scoring leading with two goals. Trent Gahm (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) and John Roth (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) also scored a goal each for VWC. Junior Josh Currier (Peterborough, Ontario/Holy Cross-Hill Academy) added an assist for the Marlins.
