SALEM, Va. – The #4 Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball fell to fifth-seeded Washington and Lee, 77-69, Thursday evening in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) quarterfinals played at the Salem Civic Center. With the loss, the Marlins' season concludes, ending with a record of 13-13.
It was a tough start for the Marlin squad as they found themselves down 11-2 in just the first two minutes. VWU battled back though, eventually tying it back up, 20-20, on a Percy Burt lay up at the 11:28 mark. Another small run by the Generals dragged the lead back out though, and going into halftime the Marlins would trail 46-34.
It was an uphill battle from there on out as every time the Marlins got within striking distance, W&L would pull away. Near the halfway point of the second, a Tyree Golston free throw cut the deficit to just 56-49, but a 12-2 run by the Generals over the next five minutes would put the game out of reach.
The Marlins two All-Conference players in Lamont Steward and Tim Fisher led the squad in scoring with 16 and 15, respectively. R.J. Nicholson would chip in 11 while Golston and Corey Pelham both finished with nine.
On the glass, Virginia Wesleyan held a 46-40 advantage led by Fisher's 10 which gave him his 11th of the season. Golston would aid in the effort with seven.
