Men's Basketball Drops Road Bout to Nationally-Ranked Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team fell, 97-67, to No. 21 Christopher Newport University Sunday afternoon on the road. With the result, the Marlins slide to 5-4 on the year while the Captains go to 8-1.

The Captains jumped out to an early lead, but the Marlins battled to keep the deficit in the single digits. Trailing 14-25 at the 12-minute mark, VWU went on a 14-4 run spurred by solid shooting from Keijon Honore that brought them within one point. A couple buckets that went CNU's way would let them keep the lead though as the Marlins trailed 47-38 at half.

Once again, the Captains came out of the intermission firing, as some keen shooting saw their lead move to 20 points just seven minutes in. The Marlins would not find a run in the second half and took the loss to its nationally-ranked foe.

Honore was extremely hot in the first half, scoring a season-high 20 points all through the first 20 minutes. Lamont Steward would also pitch in offensively as his 50% from the field (5-10) earned him 14 points.

Men's basketball will have one final game before Christmas squaring off with William Peace at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
