Second Half Surge Lifts Men's Basketball over Roanoke

Second Half Surge Lifts Men's Basketball over Roanoke
SALEM, Va. - In their third ODAC game of the season, the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins earned a key road win, taking down the Roanoke Maroons, 63-56. Tim Fisher snagged another double-double on the season as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The first half was defined by a 13-3 run by the Maroons that gave them a 26-17 lead midway through. Despite this, the Marlins continued to fight on as R.J. Nicholson notched a rare four point play with 5:42 to go until halftime. Shortly after, Keijon Honore cut the Roanoke lead to two with a deep three-pointer himself.

However, Roanoke was able to re-extend their lead, this time to 10, after Tripp Greene scored from three point land and C.J. Miles knocked down two free throws. Be that as it may, Corey Pelham, who was coming off of a career defining 28-point game against Mary Washington, was able to sink a two-point jumper as the first half clock expired to set the tone for the second half.

Other than a C.J. Miles layup after a Marlins turnover, Coach Dave Macedo's squad scored 14 straight points as it raced out to a 43-36 lead early in the second half. It seemed as if the Marlins were going to pull away, but the Maroons were not done either thanks to 10 second half points each to Josh Freund and Tripp Greene. With 1:40 left to play, the two ODAC rivals were deadlocked at 54-54. With a three from Corey Pelham, and four-straight free throws from Keijon Honore, the Marlins ultimately came out on top and enjoyed a happy trip home from Salem.

R.J. Nicholson, Keijon Honore, Lamont Steward, and Tim Fisher all finished with double-digit points as they scored, 11, 12, 10 and 12, respectively. The Marlins were able to tack on seven baskets from beyond the arc as the team shot 38.9% from the 3-point line.

Men's basketball (5-3, 3-0 ODAC) will go on the road again to take on a Hampton Roads rival in the Chrisopher Newport University Captains (6-1, 2-0 CAC) in the second of five straight road games. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM in Newport News on Sunday December 16th.
