VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The 5th-seeded Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team fell, 57-54, to #12 Randolph in the First Round of the ODAC Championship Tuesday afternoon in the Jane P. Batten Center. The loss brings the squad's season to a close, finishing with a record of 17-9.
It was a slow first half for both teams as both sides had trouble getting into any rhythm shooting the ball. The Marlins got out to an early 7-0 lead over the first three minutes, but Randolph pulled back to within one point 10 minutes later. VWU would go on another run, this time 12-3, to close out the half, bringing a little momentum into the locker room.
The Wildcats battled back in the second half though, erasing the 10-point deficit and taking the lead at the 12:19 mark. The visiting team's shooters began to get then, putting them up by 12 with just 5:15 left in regulation. A little help from the charity stripe from Corey White, Jr. and Keijon Honore followed by a Tyree Golston 3-pointer helped stop the bleeding and narrowed the Wildcat lead to just 53-47 just under three minutes to go. Following those plays and a Randolph timeout, White stole the inbounds and gave it to Percy Burt who sank a difficult layup. The Marlins chipped to within one point with 31 seconds to go, but were unable to complete the comeback as time expired with a Lamont Steward half court heave that hit the back of the rim and bounced out.
Honore filled up the stat sheet across the board, recording 10 points, seven boards, two assists and a steal. Steward had a team-high 11 points while Tim Fisher led the team in rebounds with eight.
