VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team pulled out a, 60-58, win against Bridgewater Wednesday evening in the Jane P. Batten Student Center. With the win, the Marlins move to 16-8 on the year and improve to 10-5 in conference play. Bridgewater slides to 14-10/8-7. Before the game Tyrell Thomas, Khalil Barnette and Corey White, Jr. were recognized as members of the 2018 class for Senior Day.
It came down to the last seconds for the Marlins as the Eagles trickled in a lay up to go up one with just nine seconds on the clock. Out of timeouts, Keijon Honore hurried the ball up the court and pulled up for three, only to get fouled in the act. The junior stepped to the charity stripe with just 3.5 seconds left on the clock and calmly sank all three free throws to put the Marlins up 60-58. On the inbounds, solid full court pressure prevented the Eagles from even taking a shot, securing a crucial ODAC victory.
The Marlins got off to a slow start in the game, falling behind 16-4 through the first nine minutes. A 12-2 run, highlighted by two 3-pointers, put them right back on top though and the two sides would finish out the half pretty evenly.
In the second half, momentum was shifted towards the home side as Coach Dave Macedo drew up a perfect inbounds play alittle over midway through the stanza. Lamont Steward received the ball at the top of the key from Percy Burt, who then did a wide C-cut towards the hoop. Steward lobbed the ball to the flying sophomore who threw it down with authority. The bucket gave them a six-point lead and that lead was held until the final seconds of regulation.
Three players finished with 12 points for the Marlins, including Honore, Steward and White, Jr. White, Jr. and Steward also did well on the glass as they picked up eight and seven boards, respectively.
Men's basketball returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as the team travels to Randolph for its final game of the regular season.
