HAMPDEN SYNDEY, Va. - The Virginia Wesleyan University men's basketball team defeated Hampden-Sydney, 81-54, on the road Wednesday evening. With the win, the Marlins improve to 9-3 on the year and remain undefeated in ODAC play (3-0). Hampden-Sydney moves to 4-8 on the year (1-2 ODAC).
After being held scoreless for nearly the first four minutes, the Marlins found there footing as Tim Fisher hit a bucket to give them their first points. Down 9-8 at 13:33 mark, the Marlins went on a 17-3 scoring run over the next seven minutes. VWU would take a sizable 42-20 lead into the locker room for halftime.
The squad never broke stride after that run, keeping a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half.
Contributing to the win was the team's ability to hit from the field. The squad shot almost 50% from the field and had 14 different players record a point on the evening. Leading all Marlins was Corey White, Jr. who had 14 points. Percy Burt collected 12 of his own, while Lamont Steward, Corey Pelham and R.J. Nicholson all finished with nine.
Underneath the hoop, the Marlins outshined their opponent as well, holding 47-31 rebound advantage. Steward recorded eight boards on the night, while Burt and Pelham each honed in six.
Distribution of the ball was handled mainly by Tyree Golston and Nicholson as each of them came away with four assists.
Men's basketball returns to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to Emory & Henry for another bit of ODAC action.
