Field Hockey Falls in Tough Battle with No. 6 Christopher Newport

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team fell 2-0 to No. 6 Christopher Newport University Sunday afternoon in the squad's home opener. With the loss the Marlins go to 1-2 on the year while the Captains remain unbeaten on the year (3-0).

It was a majority CNU on Birdsong, with most of the first half taking place in the Marlin defensive zone. VWU handled the nationally-ranked Captains well though, not allowing a goal through the first 29 minutes. With just six minutes to go in the stanza, CNU used a penalty corner play to finally find their way onto the scoreboard. The second half was similar to the first, with Chris. Newport controlling much of the pace. They would score on two more penalty corners to seal up their third win of the year.

In goal, Skye Swain played extremely well as her 22 saves matched a career high she set back in 2015.

Field hockey will return to action on at 11 a.m. on Saturday as the squad heads to Pennsylvania for a clash with Neumann College.
