OT Goal Lifts Maroons over VWU
SALEM, Va. – It took two overtimes before the deciding goal was scored as the Roanoke College field hockey team defeated Virginia Wesleyan University 2-1 on Saturday. It was the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for the Marlins.
Roanoke was first to get on the board Saturday as Rebecca Schmidt slammed a shot to the back of the cage at 12:51. Lauren Heffron sent a ball in from the left side that was tipped in by Schmidt for the initial score of the contest.
The Marlins answered the potent Maroon offense in the second half when they were able to capitalize on a penalty corner at 49:36. Hunter Majewski sent the corner in to Taylor Wilhelm who sent the pass back to her for the scoring chance. It was the second goal of the season for Majewski.
VWU battled on the defensive end to force the overtime period. Goalkeeper Skye Swain made seven saves in the final 21 minutes of regulation, as Emma Walsh added a pair of defensive saves to keep the Maroons from breaking the tie.
Swain continued to impressive in the overtime period, making six saves in the first overtime to keep the Marlins in the contest.
Roanoke wore down the Marlins in the second overtime as Leonore Keunen went one-on-one down the right side, finding Fiona Dougan for the game-winning score in the 96th minute.
Roanoke led 28-17 in shots while VWU paced the Maroons 10-7 in penalty corners. Emma Clark made 10 saves for Roanoke (8-1/2-0).
Swain registered 18 saves for the Marlins, the most since the first game of her collegiate career. Walsh set a new career high with the two defensive stops.
Virginia Wesleyan (4-5/0-1) travels to Ferrum College (1-8) Sunday for a 1 p.m. non-conference start.
