Late Marlin Rally Falls Short in 2-1 Defeat
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey team scored a goal late in Saturday's non-conference match with DePauw University, but could not finish the rally in a 2-1 loss.
DePauw scored the lone goal in the first half at 25:07 after putting a lot of pressure on Marlin goalie Skye Swain. Paige Berliner ripped a shot that was saved by Swain. The rebound went high where Reilly Bruce knocked it out of the air into the left side of the cage.
Swain performed admirably in the first half, registering 10 saves against the Tigers.
Bruce tacked on another goal in the second half when she scored off a rebound at the 45:53 mark.
The Marlins would need to wait for their comeback attempt as the teams were forced to exit the field with a 45-minute weather delay with just 12 minutes remaining in regulation.
Virginia Wesleyan earned a penalty corner at the 67:29 mark, setting up its scoring opportunity. Cori Jackson sent the penalty corner in, where it was knocked around in the circle. Taylor Abraszek sent the ball towards the cage where Elizabeth Roberto tipped it into the right side for the score with just over two minutes left to play.
Hannah Metzger made two saves for DePauw (1-0) as the Tigers held advantages in shots, 22-8, and penalty corners, 11-7.
Swain finished with 15 saves while allowing just the two scores. Emma Walsh recorded a defensive save for the Marlins.
Virginia Wesleyan (0-2) travels to Hood College (0-1) on Friday for a 4 p.m. non-conference start.
