Marlins Drop 6-0 Decision to CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Virginia Wesleyan University field hockey took to the road for the season opener, falling to Christopher Newport University 6-0 in non-conference action.

The Captains started the scoring early as Rachel Cooke found Rachael Allshouse off a corner just 1:28 into the match. CNU tacked on another score just eight minutes later when Madison Doss scored off a rebound.

Doss netted her second goal at the 20:15 mark off a Cooke assist. The Captains finished the scoring in the first half at 23:49 when Mackenzie Neylon sent a long feed up the turf that was deflected into the circle where Lily Bryngelson finished it off.

The Captains scored twice in the second half as Bryngelson and Jackie Kotoriy finished off the scoring.

Skye Swain made 14 saves for the Marlins as Jenna Whitener registered the first defensive save of her young career.

Virginia Wesleyan (0-1) faces DePauw University at CNU on Saturday at 4 p.m.
