Late Runs Help Marlins Take Two in Season Opening Doubleheader

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Virginia Wesleyan University baseball team opened up its season two wins in a doubleheader against Ferrum College Saturday. The Marlins took the first game, 11-7, in 10 innings before downing the Panthers 4-3 in game two.

GAME ONE: FERRUM - 7 VWU - 11

The squad found itself down early as the Panthers plated four in the opening frame but they were able to get one back in the second as a Jordan Sprouse single drove home Zack Clark from second. The Marlins then cut the deficit to just two in the third as Randy Neisz scored on an error by the pitcher.

In the fourth, VWU really got the wheels turning as they took the lead with a three-run inning. Corey King led the side off with a single up the middle and was moved to second as Daniel Petro earned a base on balls. Brady Fallon then knocked a double into left field, scoring King and moving Petro to third. Petro would eventually reach home on a Austin Obenour groundout, while Fallon reached on a Brandon Kussmaul single.

One frame later the Marlins would tack on another but Ferrum scored their first two runs since the opening stanza, tying the squads at seven runs a piece. A Nick Ficcarelli RBI single in the seventh broke the stand still and it looked like it would be all that was needed, but the Panthers scored in the bottom of the ninth to te it back up.

Going into an extra inning, the Marlins applied some real pressure putting up four in the top of the 10th which ended up being the deciding factor.

Chance Pauley pitched the first five innings for the Marlins, striking out four and only allowing a single earned run. He was followed by Doug Avery who gave up one in 1.1 innings and then Jacob Pilarski who pitched a scoreless 1.2. The final two pitchers were Nick Bay who recorded one inning with one earned run and Glen Pizzanello, who nabbed the win with one 'K' in 1.0 innings.

GAME 2: Ferrum - 3 VWU - 4

It was a strong eighth inning that helped the Marlins take game two of the doubleheader. Ferrum opened up the frame with two runs in the top, going up 3-1. Obenour got the bats going early as he led off with a double to left center. Three batters later, Deon Hammond doubled to left with two outs, sending Obenour home. The next two Marlins in Clark and Petro, reached on a walk and a HBP, respectively, to load them up for Jonathan Rivera. Rivera singled to right sending both Hammond and Clark to the dish.

The Marlins other run came by way of Kussmaul who took home on a wild pitch.

Jay Crusemire got the start for VWU, striking out 10 through 7.0 innings of work. He was relieved in the 8th by Jacob Pilarski who picked up the win on the evening. Pizzanello would pitch the final inning to earn the save.

Baseball returns to the diamond at 12 p.m. on Sunday as it finishes up its series with Ferrum in Morehead City, N.C.
