VIRGINIA BEACH -- It was one of those afternoons when Virginia Wesleyan College pitchers could not get a handle on the baseball.
The Marlins sent eight hurlers to the mound in Wednesday's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game against Randolph-Macon College's Yellow Jackets, who recorded hits off seven of them.
When the game ended, R-MC had connected for 18 hits to help take a 9-3 victory at Marlins Field. While the 19th ranked Yellow Jackets improved to 20-7 overall, and to 11-7 in the ODAC, the host Marlins dropped to 14-10, but remained in second place for the time being in the league with a 13-4 ledger.
It was a 2-1 contest after two innings, but R-MC used a five-run third to pull away. The Jackets belted six singles in the inning, all consecutive shots before the Marlins recorded the first out.
VWC closed the gap with a two-run eight on a two-run home run from senior Zach Bach (Virginia Beach/Frank W. Cox), but R-MC added a run in each of its final two at bats to repad the lead.
Virginia Wesleyan recorded six hits overall, led by a 3-for-4 effort from Bach. Matt Murray (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) added a double.
Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville/Atlee), Stuart Brown (Midlothian/Trinity), and Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach/Cape Henry Collegiate) all paced R-MC with three hits each.
Virginia Wesleyan closes the regular-season in ODAC play on Saturday, April 18, hosting Eastern Mennonite University in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Marlins and the seventh annual Strikeout Cancer Day game.
