VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Lamont Steward of the Virginia Wesleyan University men’s basketball team has been named the Marlin of the Week for the week ending on Feb. 10, 2019.
Steward played a huge role in the Marlins win over Emory & Henry Saturday afternoon, helping propel the squad to 9-5 in conference action.
The junior started the first half by cashing in 11 points, including all four of his attempts from the charity stripe. It was the second half where he really excelled though. Steward went off for another 17 points none as important as his final basket. With time winding down and down 68-69, the Marlins got the ball to Steward on the post, who muscled his way to the rim, sank the lay up and got fouled on the play. He would go on to drain the free throw and, with just nine ticks of the clock left, stop the Wasps from scoring.
It would finish as a career night for the Norfolk, Va. native as he registered a career-high 28 points and a career-high 13 boards. Steward currently leads the team in points-per-game, averaging 14.6 points a contest.
Men’s basketball will return to action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday as the team travels to Shenandoah for a battle with the Hornets.
